Summer's Over. Have Your Members Come Back?

Summer holidays disrupt even committed members' routines — Ashbourne sets out how gyms can identify cancelled, frozen, lapsed and near-miss members separately and win them back before a break becomes a cancellation.

Summer's Over. Have Your Members Come Back?

Summer is over. But for many gyms, the real challenge is only just beginning.

July and August can disrupt even the most committed member's routine. Holidays, childcare, travel and changing schedules all play their part. The important thing for gym owners to remember is that a drop in attendance does not automatically mean a member has lost interest for good.

September creates a valuable opportunity to bring those members back before a temporary break turns into a permanent cancellation.

The first step is knowing who needs attention.

Rather than sending one blanket "we miss you" email to your entire database, look at the different groups sitting behind the numbers. Who cancelled over summer? Who froze their membership? Which paying members have quietly stopped attending? And which prospects enquired but never joined?

Each group needs a different reason to act.

For cancelled members, focus on what is new. A refreshed timetable, new equipment, upgraded facilities or additional services give them a genuine reason to reconsider.

For members whose attendance has dropped, timing matters even more. Someone who is still paying but no longer visiting may already be moving towards cancellation. Identifying that change early gives your team the chance to reconnect while there is still an existing relationship to build on.

Frozen memberships can be another quick win. These members have already indicated that they intend to return, but the longer they stay away, the easier it becomes for the gym habit to disappear. A well-timed message as their freeze comes to an end can make the return feel simple and natural.

And don't forget the people who nearly joined. Someone who enquired earlier in the summer has already shown interest. If their details are sitting in a structured prospect management system rather than disappearing into an inbox, September is the perfect time to restart that conversation.

The common thread is relevance.

Discounts can work, but they shouldn't be the default. A targeted message based on what you know about a member or prospect is far more compelling than sending the same offer to everyone. Just as importantly, once someone decides to return, the joining process needs to be quick and friction-free.

For independent gyms, winning back even a small percentage of summer drop-offs can make a meaningful difference heading into the final months of the year.

The opportunity is already sitting in your data. The question is whether you're using it.
